Crankshaft pulley removal tool
Timing belt replacement on Mitsubishi Montero requires removal of crankshaft pulley. My manual calls for special tool necessary for that job. Since I didn't have access to one I fabricated my own. I got two 4'X1" zinc plated steel plates and some hardware (bolts, nuts, washers) at Home Depot. Cut the plates into 6 pieces: 3 - 18" long and 3 - 10" long. Joined them together into 3 ply metal bars with 1/4 bolts to achieve necessary strenth. Drill 7/16 holes in the ends of short piece and corresponding holes in longer one. Hole in middle of longer piece is connected to short piece with 3/8" bolt which serves as pivot. Outer bolts work as pins. They fit into matching holes on pulley face. Make sure that one does not protrude further than the other. The pulley bolt is awfully tight. My friend couldn't hold the tool while I was unscrewing the bolt. He lifts weights regularly and is quite fit. I ended up jamming my tool against a frame rail. Most convenient place to turn that pulley bolt is from underneath the engine bay. (Got to remove the skid plate, obviously). Get good extension bar and good 1/2" socket. I broke one 22mm and had to ride to Sears for replacement.

Be sure to carefully scrub off all remains of water pump gasket after you remove old pump. It takes time but unless you do so the new gasket may leak.

Since lot of parts is removed for timing belt replacement I would recommend to replace the alternator, steering pump and A/C compressor belts. I especially advise to replace upper and lower radiator hoses because they tend to soften with age and can tear causing loss of coolant. I got all my parts (timing, A/C, alternator, steering pump belts, hoses, new not rebuild water pump) from www.carparts.com with total cost including shipping of around $120.
